World's Biggest "Human Pizza" Record Broken Three Years Running at
Hunger Awareness Day
SOUTH KINGSTOWN, RI: 2011, 12 &13 at Annual Hunger Awareness Day event at Marina Park, South Kingstown, RI, the public was invited to break the world s record for the World’s Biggest Human Pizza. Attendees were asked to show up dressed in “pizza colors” and the record of 174 participants was documented in a photo taken by Don Bousquet & Son Arial Photography in 2013.
Spokesperson Steve Maciel stated: "We're building the World's Biggest Human Pizza a slice at a time. As we gain momentum, we'll ultimately build an entire pizza and we issue a challenge to other hunger organizations to try and beat our record.Rhode Island has a long heritage with pizza. Grilled pizza was first introduced here and Travel & Leisure magazine recently voted Providence third best Pizza in America. And now, RI will be always be known as the home of the World's Biggest Human Pizza!We're also creating a connection between locally sourced products as pizza ingredients and toppings to tie it all together with the local food movement, improving our local economy and the goal of creating food secure communities."
Hunger Awareness Day is coordinated by the Hunger Task Force, a joint initiative of the Jonnycake Center of Peace Dale and the URI Feinstein Center for a Hunger Free America. Over a dozen local pizzerias and ice cream stores are generously donating free pizza and ice cream and live music is provided each year by South County favorites the Westmoreland Street Jammers and featured guest appearances by Ursula George, Santana Roberts, The Way Things Work, Barbi Beyer and Paul Geremia. Other activities include seed planting for children, cooking demonstrations, Healthy Communities by Design and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) outreach and information.
The event was free of charge, but attendees were asked to bring donations of non-perishable foodto benefit the Jonnycake Center of Peace Dale’s emergency food pantry.
